Back to School Education Program
Education Program | Kampala, Uganda
It all started in the Kalerwe Market Place.
With your help, the Back 2 School Education Program will provide the books and school supplies the students at Good Samaritan desperately need. Together, we can improve their educational outcome by providing text books, literature books, practice tests for required standardized testing, sports equipment, and some basic essentials such as sanitary pads to keep the girls in school on a daily basis. Please help us get these hard working students and their dedicated teachers off to a great start this school year!
Over 15 years ago, a volunteer activist by the name of Noah Kisira wanted to make a difference in the lives of children as many of us aspire to do, he just didn’t know exactly how to begin. He knew he wanted to provide free education to children who had none, and decided to serve the poor, urban children of Uganda.
Noah began by going to the Kalerwe vegetable market in one of the busiest sectors of Kampala, in hopes of gaining the attention of the children who were not attending school. He was then able to encourage some of them to attend classes in a one room warehouse right in the middle of the market place. This modest warehouse, made of corrugated steel sidings, served as a multi-purpose classroom for kids ages 4 to 11. His first group of students totaled 20. Today, Noah and his team of teachers are providing a free education to over 300 children in a rented multi-room building now known as Good Samaritan School where the students attend daily classes by grade level.
Amongst other supportive welfare programs, BAAS International provides the students a daily hot breakfast with the generous donations and active support provided by the BAAS community of donors.
To further Noah’s efforts, BAAS conducted a study asking the teachers what other suggestions/needs/wants they considered important to further improve the educational outcomes of their students. 100% of the teachers responded, with the overwhelming majority of these dedicated teachers needing books and equipment among other items. To that end, BAAS is now taking on what’s being called our Back 2 School Education program.
